Learning at work

This month, companies across the UK have been celebrating Learning at Work. As one of our three offices is in London, we did, too.

Continually developing skills, pursuing interests, and trying new experiences throughout our lives is proven to expand not only our capabilities but also our joie de vivre. With career being such a large part of our lives, we can set strong foundations for lifelong learning by what we do during our working hours.

At TBSJ, we know that learning at work matters—to the business and, most importantly, our team, who are the secret sauce behind everything we do.

Naturally, the more a person learns, the more talents they acquire or hone, making them a more able employee. And acquiring knowledge has wider impacts, too. It ignites a flame of curiosity in the person, fostering a learning mindset and boosting confidence to tackle demanding tasks. Staff who pick up expertise within their roles or by transferring to a new department become more engaged, motivated, and productive in their work. Furthermore, they tend to become more optimistic, solution-orientated, and resilient to change.

The organization also benefits. Championing an environment where staff can learn from each other and with each other, thereby aiding mutual professional growth, builds teamwork, leadership, trust, and communication. It boosts the self-esteem and wellbeing of the team, and contributes to the development of a positive corporate culture.

Since our outset in 2010, TBSJ has understood the importance of learning at work and sought to create a culture where it can thrive. Over the years we have supported staff to branch out into fields of interest that were less familiar to them, to accept new duties, and to experiment in cutting-edge technology. The result is a team that is passionate about continuous professional development, for the benefit of themselves, TBSJ, and our clients.

Our findings reflect recent data, too. People who work for companies that invest in learning are proven to be happier in their role. More than 60% of people believe learning is key to success in their career, according to a 2021 global survey by Statista Research Department.

The theme of Learning at Work Week 2021 is Made for Learning. Humans possess an innate desire to learn, and learning together creates stronger communities, wherever they might be. As a win-win for companies and employees, learning at work is an activity TBSJ is proud to support.
